Muscles of the Face Flashcards
To help you learn the position and function of the muscles of the face for the level 2 facials theory exam
The position of the occipitofrontalis
The occipitals and frontalis are collectively known as this muscle. Its action is to lift the eyebrows and wrinkle the skin of forehead. Creates looks of surprise and horror
The action of the occipitalis
Moves scalp backwards
The position of the frontalis
Fibrous sheet over the frontal and parietal bones
The action of the procerus
Wrinkles at bridge of nose creates a disgusted expression
The position of the nasalis
Sides of the nose
The action of the levator labii superioris
Lifts upper lip, producing a cheerful expression
The position of the levator anguli oris
Thin band of muscle below levator labii superioris
The action of the zygomaticus
Moves angle of the mouth up, back and out producing smiling
The position of the orbicularis oris
Sphincter muscle around the mouth
The action of the mentalis
Lifts skin on chin and turns the lower lip outwards
The position of the depressor labii inferioris
Mid-line of chin to lower lip
The action of the buccinator
Compresses cheek against the teeth to maintain tension, aids in mastication
The position of the risorius
Between masseter and corner of the mouth
The action of the medial pterygoid
Raises the mandible
The position of the lateral pterygoid
Behind zygomatic arch
The action of the masseter
Raises the lower jaw, is the chief muscle of mastication
The position of the temporalis
From temporal bone to mandible
The action of the orbicularis oculi
Closes the eye
The position of the levator palpebrae
Upper eyelid
The action of the sternocleidomastoid
Flexes head and turns from side to side
The position of the depressor anguli oris
From modiolus to mandible
Fibrous sheet over occipital bone
Occipitalis
Moves scalp backwards
Frontalis
Continuation of frontalis down midline of the nose between eyebrows
Procerus
Compresses and dilates nasal opening, produces annoyed expression and sniffing
Nasalis
Thin band of muscle from eye to mouth
Levator Labii Superioris
Raises corner of the mouth produces cheerful expression
Levator Anguli Oris
Thin muscle angled across face superficial to masseter
Zygomaticus
Purses lips
Orbicularis Oris
Above mental tuberosity on chin
Mentalis
Pulls lower lip straight down
Depressor Labii Inferioris
Pulls down corner of the mouth
Depressor Anguli Oris
Broad thin muscle deep to masseter
Buccinator
Retracts angle of the mouth and lifts upper lip
Risorius
Inner surface of mandible
Medial Pterygoid
Pushes mandible out and opens mouth
Lateral Pterygoid
From zygomatic arch to mandible
Masseter
Raises and retracts lower jaw
Temporalis
Sphincter muscle around the eye
Orbicularis Oculi
Opens upper eyelid
Levator Palpebrae
Rope like muscle running at an angle up sides of neck
Sternocleidomastoid
