Muscles Flashcards
Where is the trapezius located?
Between the shoulder blades on your back
What is the primary function of the muscular system?
The main purpose of the muscular system is too create movement
What do muscles consist of?
Each muscle is composed of fibres encased in connective tissue forming tendons at either end
Define ORIGIN
The point of attachment to a stationary bone which stays relatively fixed during a muscular contraction (e.g Bicep: origin is the scapula during a bicep curl)
Define INSERTION
The point of attachment to a moveable bone which gets closer to the origin during muscular contraction (e.g Bicep: insertion is the radius during a bicep curl)
Define “Agonist”
The muscle responsible for creating movement at a joint - also known as the prime mover
Define “Antagonist”
A muscle that opposes the agonist providing a resistance for co-ordinated movement
Define “Fixator”
A muscle that stabilises one part of the body while another part moves
What is concentric contraction
The muscle shortens producing tension - this pulls the bones closer causing joint movement
What is eccentric contraction
The muscle lengthens producing tension. This resists force to control joint movement
What is isometric contraction
The muscle contracts BUT does not change in length e.g biceps brachii simply holding a weight
What are slow twitch muscle fibres
Designed for aerobic exercise = using oxygen to produce small amounts of tension for a long time
What are fast twitch muscle fibres
Designed for anaerobic exercise = producing high contractions for short amounts of time
What are the 2 types of fast twitch fibres?
Fast Oxidative Glycolytic + Fast Twitch Glycolytic
