Linear Motion Flashcards
Define Linear Motion
Motion in a straight or curved line with all body parts moving at the same time in the same direction at the same speed
What creates Linear Motion?
A direct force which poses through the centre of mass of a body
What is Displacement and how is it measured?
The shortest straight line route between two positions - metres (m)
What is Velocity and how is it calculated + measured?
The rate of change of displacement/speed in a given direction - displacement ÷ time - metres per second (m/s)
What is Acceleration and how is it calculated + measured?
The rate of change of velocity/change in velocity in the time taken to make the change - change in velocity ÷ time - metres per second squared
On a distance/time graph, what would a Horizontal Line represent?
No change in position over time / stationary body
On a distance/time graph, what would a Straight Line with a Positive Gradient represent?
Constant change in position over time / constant speed. Steeper gradient means faster speed
On a distance/time graph, what would a Curved Line with Decreasing Gradient represent?
Decreasing change in position over time / decreasing speed
On a distance/time graph, what would a Curved Line with Increasing Gradient represent?
Increasing change in position overtime / Increasing speed
On a speed/time graph, what would a Straight Line represent?
Constant speed. The higher the line the faster the speed
On a speed/time graph, what would a Line with a positive Gradient represent?
Increasing speed. Acceleration is constant if the line is straight
On a speed/time graph, what would a Line with a positive, decreasing Gradient represent?
Accelerating to a constant speed
On a speed/time graph, what would a Line with a negative Gradient represent?
Decreasing speed / deceleration
What is the only difference between speed/time and velocity/time graphs?
Velocity time graphs include a negative Y axis
What does the negative Y axis on a velocity/time graph represent?
It indicates that a body has changed direction
