Cardiovascular System Flashcards
What does the Cardiovascular system refer to?
The heart, Blood vessels and Blood
What is the role of the Right side of the heart?
It contracts to circulate deoxygenated blood from the body through the pulmonary circuit to the lungs
What is the role of the Left side of the heart?
(Has a thicker muscular wall to contracts with more force) Circulates oxygenated blood from the lungs through the large systemic circuit to the muscles and organs
What is the difference between a vein and an artery?
A Vein carries blood towards the heart whereas an artery carries blood away from the heart
What is the purpose of the pulmonary circuit?
It carries deoxygenated blood to the lungs through the pulmonary artery and carries oxygenated blood back the the heart through the pulmonary vein
What is the purpose of the systemic circuit?
It carries oxygenated blood to the body through the aorta and deoxygenated blood back to the heart through the vena cava
What is sub-maximal exercise?
Low to moderate intensity exercise, such as long duration events. It is aerobic
What is maximal exercise?
High intensity exercise, such as sprints and short bursts. It is anaerobic
What is SV or Stroke Volume?
It is the amount of blood the heart distributes per BEAT
What is Q or Cardiac Output?
It is the amount of blood the heart distributes per MINUTE
What is HR or Heart Rate?
It is the amount of times the heart beats per MINUTE
What is VR or Venous Return?
It is the rate of blood flow returning back to the heart
