Ergogenic Aids Flashcards
What is an Ergogenic Aid?
A technique or substance used to enhance performance and recovery
What is a Pharmacological Aid?
A supplement or drug that enhances performance by increasing hormone levels in the body
What is a Physiological Aid?
A technique that enhances performance by directly influencing the physiological capacity of a particular body system
What is a Nutritional Aid?
A supplement, food or drink that is consumed to enhance performance or recovery
List some examples of Ergogenic Aids
Altitude Training, Video Analysis, Compression Wear
List some examples of Pharmacological Aids
Anabolic Steroids, Human Growth Hormone (HGH), Erythropoietin
List some examples of Physiological Aids
Blood Doping, Intermittent Hypoxic Training (IHT), Cooling Aids
List some examples of Nutritional Aids
Glycogen Loading, Creatine, Caffeine, Hydration, Nitrate
List some Benefits & Risks of Anabolic Steroids
+ Increased muscle mass, promotes recovery, ability to train at higher intensity for longer
- Liver damage or cancer, increased blood pressure, raised LDL cholesterol, shrinking of testicles, reduced sperm count
List some Benefits & Risks of Erythropoietin
+ Increased red blood cell and haemoglobin count, increased oxygen carrying capacity of the blood, increased VO2 MAX
- Increased blood viscosity, decreased blood flow or Q, increased risk of blood clots, heart failure and stroke
List some Benefits & Risks of Human Growth Hormone (HGH)
+ Increased muscle mass, strength and power, Increased fat free mass/ decreased fat mass, increased glucose levels, stimulate bone, cartilage and muscle growth
- Hypertrophy of internal organs, abnormal bone growth, bone thickening deformities, increased risk of diabetes, high blood pressure and cancer
Define OBLA or Onset Blood Lactate Accumulation
The exercise intensity where blood lactate concentration reaches 4mmo/l or the point during exercise at which lactic acid builds up in your blood and fatigue sets in
Define Lactate threshold
The exercise intensity where blood lactate concentration increases suddenly and dramatically
Define blood viscosity
The thickness and stickiness of blood. It is direct measure of the ability of blood to flow through the vessels
Define Hypertrophy
The enlargement of an organ or muscle fro the increase in size of its cells
