what is the sliding filament theory

A

it explains how when the myofibrils inside muscles retain a nerve impulse calcium ions are released which sends a signal to the myosin filaments to attach to the actin filaments and when these touch together the muscle contracts pulling the actin filaments closer together closing the h zone until the filaments are practically ‘sliding’ on top of each other
