Q

what is the difference between a catabolic and anabolic reaction

A

anabolic is two smaller molecules joining together to make a larger molecule
catabolic is a larger molecule being broken down into a two smaller molecules

Q

explain the ‘lock and key’ hypothesis and why it relates to why enzymes are specific to substrates

A

an enzyme is specific to a substrate the same way a key is specific to a lock, if the enzyme doesn’t fit with a substrate the chemical reaction is unable to occur

Q

why does temperature effect enzyme action

A

beyond 45-50 degrees enzymes structures change and become denatured. the shape of the enzyme is crucial for its functioning and if they are denatured an enzyme becomes inactive.

Q

why does pH level effect enzyme action

A

each enzyme has a specific pH where it works at optimum level as they are very sensitive to pH

Q

why do co-factors effect enzyme action

A

co-factors change the shape of the active site an enzyme can fit with a substrate for a reaction to occur

Q

why does concentration effect enzyme action

A

the higher the concentration of an enzyme the faster the rate of reaction because there are more enzymes to influence reactions
