COPD Flashcards
what is COPD
chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
what does COPD do
causes obstruction of the airflow to the lungs making it difficult to breathe
why does COPD differ in developing countries
living standards
limited resource
poor access to health care
what is the leading cause of COPD
tabacco smoking
what is COPD associated with in Africa
workplace poluution
is tobacco use increasing or decreasing in developing countries
increasing
what do people in developed countries receive that people in developing countries do not receive
access to medical treatment and resources
how many people in Australia have COPD
1 in 20 australians aged 45 and over
what gender is COPD more common in
men
what culture in Australia is COPD more common among
aboriginal and torres strait islander people
where is COPD more prevalent in Aus
low socioeconomic areas
what are the 3 lung diseases in COPD
emphysema, chronic bronchitis, chronic asthma
what do people who have COPD have
damaged alveoli
what happens during emphysema
over time the inner walls of the alveoli weaken and rupture which creates a large space inside the alveoli
what happens when u exhale with emphysema
the damaged alveoli do not work properly and old air gets trapped inside which leaves no room for fresh, oxygen rich air to enter the alveoli
what is the alveoli not able to support during emphysema
the bronchial tubes because they collapse and cause an obstruction and the air becomes trapped
what are 5 causes of emphysema
tobacco smoke marijuana smoke air pollution chemical fumes dust
what is alpha 1 disorder
a common genetic condition that causes chronic lung and liver disease that causes the elasticity of alveoli become weak
can emphysema occur for many years without symptoms
yes
what is emphysemas main symptom
shortness of breath
when does emphysema’s shortness of breath occur
physical activity
daily tasks
body at rest
what happens to the lung’s epithelial barrier during emphysema
the lungs epithelial barrier becomes invaded by foreign bodies and the lungs respond by becoming inflamed and this begins to lead to destruction of the epithelial tissue
how can u prevent emphysema
avoid smoke
wear mask around chemical fumes
is there cures for any of the COPD lung diseases
no only management
what is the main advice with someone with COPD to slow down the speed of their decline
stop smoking
what is a treatment method for emphysema
bronchodilator medication - relaxes muscles around airway
anti-inflammatory medication
oxygen therapy
lung volume reduction Kruger
what is chronic bronchitis
inflammation of the bronchi
what is overproduces and hypersecreted in chronic bronchitis
mucus by goblet cells
what is pulmonary rehabilitation
improving quality of life through increasing exercise tolerance, nutrition planning, reducing shortness of breath, inspiratory muscle training
