what is a motor unit?
An alpha motor neuron and all the muscle fibres it innervates
what are the principles of muscle contraction and force? (4)
- Alpha motor neuron activates bundle of muscle cells
- each muscle cell produces equal amount of force
- no. of alpha motor neurons activated will contribute to force produced by motor units
- relative force gained by muscle contraction dependant on no. of motor units activated
what controls how many muscle cells need to be activated?
the brain
in which direction to skeletal muscle cells contract?
horizontally (lengthways)
when do skeletal muscle cells contract?
when signal from motor neuron arrives at neuromuscular junction
how are skeletal muscle cells bundled?
horizontally

when a group of motor neurons activated

what unit is used to show frequency of stimuli?
~msec range (millisecond)
how do you achieve summation?
give 2 stimuli at short enough intervals (<200ms)
what happens when the interval of 2 stimuli is as short as 50ms apart?
total contraction force doubled
how do you produce tetanus?
give continual stimuli at maximal strength
how does a twitch become summation?
more frequent activation (greater tension)
what causes force generated by motor unit to fuse?
when second activation occurs before muscle relaxes
how are cardiac muscles arranged?
tandemly (sequentially one after another)
how do cardiac muscles contract?
one after another in direction signal travels from
what causes cardiac muscle cells to contract?
signal from pacemaker cell (autorythmic cardiac muscle cell)
what causes contractile cardiac muscle cells to contract?
when signal from neighbouring cell is transported through the insulated wall of intercalated disc
what direction does the signal travel in cardiac muscle cells
unidirectionally (activates one cell after another)
what is the order of the action potential in cardiac muscle cells? (3)
- action potentials of autorythmic cells
- action potential passed to contractile cells
- heart pumps blood
what are intercalated discs?
specialised junctions between cardiac muscle fibres
how are intercalated discs specialised to their function? (2)
- have holes allowing signalling molecules to travel
- insulated, only permitting signalling molecules to travel
what are the 2 differences between skeletal muscle cells and cardiac muscle cells? (2)
- skeletal muscle cells activated by motor neuron
- contractile cardiac cells activated by adjacent neighbouring cell
