Muscle Anatomy: Muscle Walls of Trunk Flashcards
What are oblique and rectus muscles
Oblique muscles lie at an angle to the body axis
Rectus muscles lie parallel to the body axis
What muscles are the oblique group made up of?
Thoracic region, abdominal region and transversus abdominis
What muscles make up the thoracic region?
External intercostals and internal intercostals
Where do external intercostals originate?
Inferior border of each rib
Where is the insertion of external intercostals?
Superior border of more inferior rib
What action do the external intercostals do?
Elevate ribs
Where do the internal intercostals originate?
Superior border of each rib
Where is the insertion of the internal intercostals?
Inferior border of the adjacent superior rib
What action does the internal intercostals do?
Depress ribs
What muscles make up the abdominal region?
External oblique and internal oblique
Where does the external oblique originate?
External and inferior borders of ribs 5-12
Where is the insertion of the external oblique?
Linea alba and iliac crest
What action does the external oblique perform?
Compresses abdomen; depress ribs, flex or bend vertebral column
Where does the internal oblique originate?
Lumbodorsal fascia and iliac crest
Where is the insertion of the internal onlique?
Inferior ribs, xi[hoid process and linea alba
What action does the internal oblique perform?
Compress abdomen, depress ribs, flex or bend vertebral column
Where does the transversus abdominis originate?
Cartilages of ribs 6-12, iliac crest, and lumbodorsal fascia
Where is the insertion of the transversus abdominis?
Linea alba and pubis
What action does the transversus abdominis perform?
Compress abdomen
What is the linea alba?
Tendinous band that runs along the anterior midline
What is the muscle that is an example of a rectus muscle?
Rectus abdominis
Where does the rectus abdominis originate?
Superior surface of the oubis near the symphysis
Where is the insertion of the rectus abdominis?
Inferior surfaces of costal cartilages (ribs 5-7) and xiphoid process
What action does the rectus abdominis perform?
Depress ribs, flex vertebral column, compress abdomen
