Muscle Flashcards
Which type of muscle is non striated?
Smooth muscle
Which type of muscle is striated?
Skeletal
Cardiac
Which muscle type has peripheral nuclei?
Skeletal
How is skeletal muscle developed?
Mesoderm derived myogenic stem cells give rise to myoblasts
What are the 3 types of Skeletal muscle fibres?
Red
White
Intermediate
What is the structure of Red skeletal muscle fibres?
Small diameter
Rich vascularization
Tire slowly
Lots of mitochondria
What is the structure of White skeletal fibres?
Large diameter
Poor vascularisation
Few mitochondria
Tire quickly
What are the shapes of muscles?
Circular Convergent Parallel Unipennate Multipennate Fusiform Bipennate
What are the 3 layers of skeletal muscle?
Endomysium (inner)
Perimysium (middle)
Epimysium (outer)
What 3 molecules form thin filaments of skeletal and cardiac muscles?
Actin
Tropomyosin
Troponin
Where is the nuclei in cardiac muscle?
Central
How are the T tubules in Cardiac muscles different to those in the Skeletal muscle?
T tubules lie in register with the Z bands and not the A-I band junction
What are Purkinje fibres?
Specialised myocardial cells that carry impulses from the SA node to the ventricular muscle
What is the structure of Purkinje fibres?
Large cells with abundant glycogen, sparse myofilaments, extensive gap junctions
What do Smooth muscle cells lack?
No sarcomeres or T tubules
