What is a Municipal Undertaking?
- Municipal refers to the local government
- Municipal undertakings are activities organised by the local councils.
- There are eleven local councils in Northern Ireland
- Each council has elected representatives who have been voted onto the council by the public.
What are the main sources of finance for Municipal Undertakings?
Government grants: Government gives capital grants to assist building work. It’s unusual for the government to fund any other bit.
Rates: Rates are paid by each householder/business in accordance to the size of their property.
Charge for the activity: An entrance fee.
What is a Social Enterprise?
A business which has social aims and reinvests a large amount of its profits into the community or back into the enterprise. It is set up to address social issues in the local community.
What are the three aims of social enterprises?
To provide employment, to provide a sense of community, to solve environmental issues.
