Mumps Flashcards
Respiratory System
Droplet transmission occurs when bacteria or viruses travel on relatively large respiratory droplet that people sneeze, cough, drip or exhale. They travel only short distances before settling, usually 3 feet. These droplets are loaded with infectious disease.
Mumps is a contagious disease caused by a virus. It spreads through direct contact with saliva or respiratory droplets from the nose or throat.
Preventing the Spread
Lifestyle factors- Diet: eat plants that are whole, unrefined and minimally pressed.
Physical activity- 150 mins a week
Sleep 7-9 hours a night.
Hygiene practices- Air circulation- open windows. Sleep in separate rooms. Overcrowding.
Symptoms- Flu muscle and joint aches, tiredness, low grade fever, pain swallowing, mild pain in abdominal region, swelling in parotid glands
Treatment
Vaccination- MMR- 4-6 and 12-15 years old
Hospitalisation is unlikely
Saliva Swab- For mumps used the detect the presence of immunoglobin M- mumps antibody. Swollen paraptosis in 95% of cases.
Paracetamol- Pain killer- Reducing the production of prostaglandins in brain + spinal cord. Reduce nerve sensitising prostaglandins in the brain- paracetamol may increase pain threshold.
Ibuprofen- NSAID- inhibitor of cyclooxygenase. COX-2 inhabitation of COX-2 activity decreases the synthesis of prostaglandins- inflammation, fever, pain, swelling. Non-steroid anti-inflammatory drug.
