Screening At Birth
Every baby offered a thorough physical examination soon after birth to check their eyes, heart, hips and in boys testicles. Identify any conditions
72 Hours after birth, 6-8 weeks old later conditions
New born blood test. Heel prick test
Results- No call back if negative results. Call back in 203 weeks if out of range result found
Positive + Negative Results:
Negative- Normal range- no conditions
Positive- Condition has come up but may not be definite, more tests needed
Sweat Test
Measures chlorine in sweat. CF 2 to 5 times more than normal amount. Skin is stimulated to produce enough sweat to be absorbed in special collector- analysed.
Method- Area of arm washed, 2 electrodes- pilocarpine gel- glands produce sweat + weak electric current push medicine- electrodes removed. Sweat collection device is then attached to the clean skin surface in an area where glands stimulated sweat collected for 30 mins. Turns blue- visible. Placed in sweat analyser
Results- 60 millimoles per litre- High CF. 29= CF unlikely. 30-59 more tests
Weight gain
Mucus blocking the ducts of pancreas, prevents enzymes reaching small intestine
Diet- Avoid macronutrients
