Multiple sclerosis Flashcards
Describe MS (6)
Chronic neurological disorder that affects 20-40yo, 50per 100k uk
Demylination process in brain
Mistakenly rec myelin in neuron - attacks
IS attacks neurons by travelling through bv in brain
Breaches endothelial lining in PBB - attacks neuron
TC release cytokine, causes infl, attacks more t cells, continues = prog
Cause of MS (7)
Unknown, factors inc chances
Vit d def
Disproportion women
4 types: RRMS - random attacks e.g vision / motor loss = progress greater
SPMS = constant progression rather than emitting
PPMS = COnstant progression over time
PRMS = random ISA= Prog
Symptoms of MS (5)
Tremours
Dystharial (Speaking difficulty)
Involuntary eye movements
Maybe be painful
Muscle weakness or spasms
How to diagnose MS (2)
MRI 2 detect white plaque in brain
Cerebral fluid with high AB conc shows high liklihood of MS
How to manage symptoms (5)
No cure but treatments
Cortico steroids or cyclophasamide
Red AIA, slows prog
Plasmophorus can remove AB that breached
Immunosuppressant dec cytokine conc, red t cell, pherapy etc
How to prevent MS
Inc vit D, no smoking, sleep and balanced diet
