Hypertension Flashcards
Describe hypertension (5)
Chronic MC of elevated bp, prim or sec ht
causes vascular changes: thicker atrial walls + narrowing vessel lumens
Renal contributions: Retains na+ inc bv, angiotestin 2 causes vasconstriction
Causes higher vascular resistance = higher wl and reduces cardiac efficiency = HF
Main organs suffer
Symptoms (3)
Heartaches, dizziness, fatigue
Cardiac symptoms - chest pain + short breath
Neirological symptoms: Blurred vision, confusion, stroke symptoms
diagnosis 5
Measure bp: <120/80mmHg is normal but H1 140/139 and H2 140/190
Blood tests to measure kidney functions and cholesterol
urine tests 4 kidn dam
ECG for heart dam
Ecocardiogram measure heart function and damage
Treatment 4
Diet
Medication: Ca channe;l blockers e.g emlodopine relaxes vessels
beta blockers like metoprolol lowers heart rate
no cure but m; early detection good (elaborate)
