Multi-store model Flashcards
Define multi-store model
Rep. of how memory works in 3 stores - sensory register, STM and LTM.
Describes how info is transferred from one store to another and how it’s forgotten/remembered
Define sensory register.
Memory stores for our senses. Coding in iconic sensory register is visual and acoustic in echoic sensory register.
Capacity of sensory registers is huge and and info lasts less than half a second.
What sense is iconic store?
Visual
What sense is echoic store?
Hearing
What 2 psychologists developed the multi store model and in what year?
Atkinson + Shiffrin, 1968 and 1971
What is iconic memory?
Info is coded visually
What is echoic memory?
Info is coded acoustically
Why does STM have limited capacity?
It can only contain about 5 things before forgetting occurs
What is maintenance rehearsal?
When we repeat info to ourselves over and over again. This makes the info stay in STM and eventually transfers into LTM
What is retrieval?
Information transferred from LTM to STM bc we want to recall it
