Define ‘Conformity’.
A change in a person’s behaviour/opinion as a result of pressure from a person/group
Define ‘Internalisation’.
Deep conformity.
Individual takes on majority view; accepts it as correct.
Leads to long-lasting, permanent change in behaviour, even in absence of group.
Define ‘Identification’.
Moderate conformity.
Individual copies the group’s behaviour as he values the group and wants to be a part of it.
Individual doesn’t agree with everything the group believes.
Define ‘Compliance’.
Superficial, temporary conformity.
Individual publicly agrees with group, but privately disagrees.
Change in behaviour only lasts in presence of group.
Define ‘Informational Social Influence’.
Bob agrees with group as Bob believes group is correct.
Bob agrees bc he wants to be correct as well.
Can lead to internalisation.
Define ‘Normative Social Influence’.
Bob agrees with group view bc Bob wants to be accepted and gain social approval.
Can lead to compliance.
