Describe the concept of ISI (informational social influence).

A
ISI is to do with accuracy of information, you vs group.
Example:
If you don't know the answer to a question, you're likely to agree with the answer the class gives as you feel the class is correct.

ISI is a cognitive process - it’s to do with what you THINK

ISI most likely to occur in new situations/situations where there is more than 1 answer.
ISI also occurs when someone is regarded to as an ‘expert’.

Describe the concept of NSI (normative social influence).

A

NSI is to do with social norms, i.e. what’s normal behaviour.
Norms regulate behaviour.
NSI is emotional - people prefer social approval over rejection.
NSI occurs when an individual is concerned about rejection - can occur with strangers AND friends, as person wants social approval.

NSI more obvious in stressful situations, where person has more need for social support
