Multi-store Model Flashcards
What are the 3 main components of MSM
Sensory register - STM - LTM
What are the two main parts of the sensory register?
1) iconic memory (visual information coded visually)
2) echoic memory (auditory information coded acoustically)
What is the duration of the sensory register
Half a second
How does information proceed the sensory register
What you pay attention to will
What is the process of repeating information in the STM called?
Maintenance rehearsal
How does information pass into the LTM
Prolonged rehearsal
What’s the capacity of STM
7+/- 2
What’s the duration of the STM
Around 30 seconds (unless rehearsed)
Describe the LTM
Potentially permanent memory store for information that has been rehearsed (unlimited capacity as well)
Describe the process of retrieval
Memory sorted in LTM must be retrieved to STM to access it
Supporting evidence for MSM?
Baddeleys study shows coding for LTM and STM are qualitatively different supporting existence of separate stores
Criticism of MSM
States STM is a unitary store - KF digits showed different STM stores to process visual and verbal Information - WWM better representation - Also different types of LTM
More than one type of rehearsal
- MSM says what matters for LTM is the amount of rehearsal
- Actually what matters is rehearsal type and in fact elaborative rehearsal where you link information to existing knowledge is more important
