Long & short term memory Flashcards
What are the 3 types of LTM
1) Episodic
2) Semantic
3) Procedural
Describe episodic memory
LTM for personal events. - Including behaviours, people and places. - Time stamped (can remember WHEN) - Needs to be called actively with effort
Describe semantic memory
Our knowledge of facts and the world (conceptual knowledge) - Not time stamped/ not personal - Needs to be actively recalled
Deceive procedural memory
Can recall without conscious awareness
Clinical evidence for different types of LTM
But semantic and procedural memory in tact.
-
One store damaged but the other still intact suggests separate stores
Neuroimaging evidence
Participants performed various memory tasks while in a PET scanner.
-
Found Episodic was in RIGHT prefrontal cortex and Semantic in the LEFT prefrontal cortex
Describe the WMM
It also includes how the brain temporarily stores and manipulates information
What are the 4 components of the WMM
1) central executive
2) phonological loop
3) Visio-spatial sketchpad
4) episodic buffer
Deceive the central executive
Very limited processing capacity
Deceive the phonological loop
Deals with auditory information so coding is acoustic
What is the phonological loop subdivided into
Articulatory process: allows maintenance rehearsal (2 seconds worth of what you can say)
Deceive the Visio-spatial sketch pad
Capacity of about 4 objects
What is the VSS subdivided into
Inner scribe: records the arrangement of objects in the visual field
Dual task performance support
Participants had more difficulty doing 2 visual tasks than a visual and verbal task
-
Because both tasks were competing for the same slave system
-
Supports existence of separate systems
Lack of clarity
Lack of clarity over central executive suggests not a complete model
