Describe proactive interference
Occurs when OLD blocks new
Describe retroactive inter fence

Describe effects of similarity study
McGeoch and McDonald
1) participants learnt a word list until 100% accuracy then learnt a new list.
2) when recalling the original list, performance depended on the nature of the second list
3) the more similar the material, the worse the recall
Describe Rugby study
Asked rugby players to recall names of teams played
-
Some had missed matches so varied how long ago ‘last team’ was played
-
Accuracy of recall depended on number of games played in between NOT on how long ago they had played the teams
Limitation of artificial materials
Word list have no meaning - Interference may not have such an effect in real life - Counter: Rugby by Baddely
