Coding, Capacity And Duration Flashcards
Define coding
The format in which information is stored in memory stores
Outline Baddeleys studying into coding
1) Gave 4 groups different word lists
2) second word list with either semantic or acoustically similar/ dissimilar words
3) asked participants to recall original word list immediately (STM recall) and also 20 mins (LTM recall)
What were Baddeleys findings
Participants with semantically similar words did worse on LTM recall
-
Suggests STM codes acoustically
What technique allows capacity to be measured
Digit span: read out increasing numbers until participant gets it wrong
Describe chunking
- Everything in 7 so stm capacity is 5-+ 2
2. 5 words recalled as well as 5 letters can be
How was baddelys study lacking
Artificial stimuli
Research on duration of STM
- Participants given consonant syllable and also 3 didig number
- Asked to count backwards until told to stop at different times (called retention interval)
- Asked to recall Sylable
Research on duration of LTM
- 400 people aged 18-75
- Recall of yearbook using free name recall and picture recall
- Those within 15 years had 90% accurac, 70% for over 48 years
High external valdisity of LTM duration
Real life stimuli
