multi-store memory model Flashcards
short term sensory store
all info goes here
stays for 1 sec
irrelevant info is filtered out and passed on to short term memory
selective attention
filters out irrelevant information
experts how experts better selective attention as they are more more aware of which information is important
short term memory
stays for up to 30 secs
limited capacity/can get overload if selective attention isn’t affective
5-9 items
perceives all information from all STSS
perceives information from the LTM to compare against current information and decide on a cause of information
info gets encoded into LTM
info can be held through chunking - piecing info together
long term memory
procedural - stores motor programmes episodic - past experiences semantic - facts and knowledge unlimited info stays in here forever
advantages
simplifies memory process
explains how people with brain damage or amnesia have dysfunctional memory
disadvantages
too simplified - does not explain why we remember different sorts of info
does not prove the distinction between STM and LTM and does not explain the interaction between STM and LTM
