Mucolytics and Antitussives Flashcards
Name 4 types of nasal decongestants
Phenylephrine, pseudoephedrine, xylometazoline, oxymetazoline.
Phenylephrine MOA
Post synaptic a receptor stimulant
Pseudoephedrine MOA
Both a and b agaonist properties
Xylometazoline MOA
A1A and A2B adrenergic
Oxymetazoline MOA
Long Acting A1 snd A2A agonist
Antitussives
Dextromethorphan and Benzonatate
Dextromethorphan MOA
Opiod Derivatives that decreases the sensitivity of cough receptors in the medullary center
Dextromethorphan AE
Less constipation than codeine
Benzonatate MOA
Non narcotic local analgesic for stretch receptors and thus reduces the cough reflex at its source
Expectorants
N-acetylcysteine and Guaifenesin
N-acetylcysteine MOA
Open disulfide bonds reducing the viscosity of mucous. Also works as an antioxidant
Guaifenesin MOA
Increases the volume and reduces the viscosity of secretions in the trachea and bronchi
Drugs for Cystic Fibrosis
Dornase Alfa, Ivacftor and Lumacaftor, Acetyl cysteine
Dornase Alfa MOA
Recombinant human deoxyribonuclease I that cleaves the extracellular DNA from invading neutrophils to decrease mucus viscosity
Ivacaftor and Lumacaftor MOA
Only used in Pts with mutation G551D by increasing Cl- ion transport channel open probability
