MSK UL Muscles Of The Forearm Flashcards
Where in the forearm are the muscles found that make up the snuff box?
In the posterior forearm - specifically the deep layer.
How many muscles are there is the anterior forearm? Each layer?
8 all together.
4 superficial, 1intermediate and 3 deep
What are the superficial muscles of the forearm?
Pronator teres, flexor carpi radialis, palmaris longus, flexor carpi ulnaris
What is the role of pronator teres?
Pronation of the forearm
What is the role of flexor carpi radialis?
Flexion and abduction of the hand at the wrist
What is the role of palmaris longus?
Flexion of the wrist
What is the role of flexor carpi ulnaris?
Flexion at the wrist and adduction of the hand at the wrist
What is the intermediate muscle of the anterior forearm and what is its role?
Flexor digitorum superficialis
Flexion of Metacarpophanalngeal joints and proximal interphalangeal joint at the 4 fingers
What is flexor digitorum superficialis’ relationship with nerves and arteries?
The muscle has 2 heads - 1 attached to the humerus and the other to the radius.
The median nerve and ulnar artery pass between the the muscle’s two heads then travel posteriorly
What are the deep muscles of the forearm?
Flexor digitorum profundus
Flexor pollicis longus
Pronator quadratus
What are the muscles of the anterior forearm innervated by? What are the exceptions?
Median nerve
Exceptions: medial half od the flexor digitorum profundus and flexor carpi ulnaris
What is the role of flexor digitorum?
Flexion of distal IP joints
What is the role of flexor pollicis longus?
Flexion of the thumb
What is the role of pronator quadratus?
Pronation of the forearm
What is the action which is useful to remember for the deep muscles of the anterior forearm?
Punching action
