MSK Shoulder Flashcards
There are two groups of shoulder muscles- what are they?
Extrinsic and intrinsic
Where do extrinsic muscles originate and insert?
Originate at torso and attach at shoulder bones (scapula, humerus, clavicle)
Where do intrinsic muscles originate and insert?
Originate from scapula/clavicle and attach to humerus
There are two layers of extrinsic muscles; superficial and deep.
Name the superficial extrinsic muscles.
Trapezius
Latissimus dorsi
Innervation of trapezius?
Accessory nerve for motor
Also receives proprioceptor fibres from C3-4 spinal nerve
There are a few muscles which are so big that different parts of the muscle have different actions.
These include trapezius and deltoid, which have different types of fibres having different actions.
What are the various actions of the trapezius muscle?
Upper fibres- elevate scapula
Middle fibres- retract scapula
Lower fibres- pull scapula inferiorly
What is the innervation of the latissimus dorsi?
Thoracodorsal nerve
What is the action of the latissimus dorsi muscle?
Extension, adduction and medial rotation of upper limb
Name the deep extrinsic shoulder muscles.
Levator scapulae
Rhomboid major
Rhomboid minor
What is the innervation of the deep extrinsic shoulder muscles- the leavtor scapulae and rhomboids?
Dorsal scapular nerve
What is the action of the levator scapulae muscle?
Elevation of scapula
What is the action of the two rhomboid muscles?
Retraction and rotation of the scapula
Which rhomboid muscle sits more superiorly?
Rhomboid minor
Where does the rhomboid minor originate from?
Spinous processes of C7-T1
Where does the rhomboid major originate from?
Spinous processes of T2-5
Name the six intrinsic muscles of the shoulder.
Deltoid
Subscapularis
Infraspinatous
Supraspinatous
Teres major
Teres minor
Which of the six intrinsic muscles of the shoulder make up the rotator cuff muscles?
Supraspinatus
Infraspinatus
Teres minor
Subscapularis
Innervation of deltoid?
Axillary nerve
There are a few muscles which are so big that different parts of the muscle have different actions.
These include trapezius and deltoid, which have different types of fibres having different actions.
What are the various actions of the deltoid muscle?
Anterior fibres- flexion and medial rotation
Middle fibres- abduction
Posterior fibres- extension and lateral rotation
Innervation of teres major?
Lower subscapular nerve
Action of teres majoe?
Adduction and extension at shoulder
Innervation of supraspinatus?
Suprascapular nerve
Actions of supraspinatus muscle?
Abduction of upper limb at shoulder
Innervation of infraspinatus muscle?
Suprascapular nerve
Action of infraspinatus muscle?
Lateral rotation of arm
Innervation of subscapularis?
Upper and lower subscapular nerves
Action of subscapularis muscle?
Medial rotation of arm
Innervation of teres minor?
Axillary nerve
Actions of teres minor?
Lateral rotation of arm
RECAP- which two intrinsic muscles are innervated by the axillary nerve?
Deltoid
Teres minor
