Anatomy of the Eye Flashcards
Name the three coats of the eyeball.
Fibrous coat
Vascular coat
Sensory coat
Which layer is the outer layer?
Fibrous coat
Which coat of the eyeball contains collagen?
Fibrous coat
Which cranial nerve goes out from the posterior aspect of the eyeball?
CN II, optic nerve
Name the two components of the fibrous coat of the eyeball.
Cornea
Sclera
What is the sclera?
White of the eye, forms posterior 5/6 of eyeball
Name the three parts of the vascular coat of the eyeball.
Iris
Choroid
Ciliary body
Which part of the sensory coat gives colour of the eye?
Iris
What makes up the sensory coat of the eyeball?
The retina
The retina ends in a serrated margin just anterior to the equator of the eye. What is the name of this serrated margin?
Ora serrata
What makes up the anterior 1/6 of the fibrous coat of the eye?
Cornea
What is the cornea?
Transparent window which allows light rays into the eyes
Both the sclera and the cornea contain collagen. What is different about the collagen in the sclera?
Collagen fibres of different diameters arranged irregularly to give white appearance.
Both the sclera and the cornea contain collagen. What is different about the collagen in the cornea?
Very fine, uniform fibres which allows the light to pass through it
What does the iris do?
Controls diameter of pupil
What is the function of the ciliary body?
Suspends lens
Produces aqueous humor
What is aqueous humor?
Fluid which fills the space in front of the lens
What is the role of the choroid?
Richly vascular and supplies blood to outer layers of the retina
What does the retina contain?
Light sensitive rods and cones which help us to see
What is found in the anterior segment of the eye?
Aqueous humor
What is found in the posterior segment of the eye?
Vitreous humor
What is vitreous humor?
Gel which helps push the retina against the choroid.
Why is everything in the path of the light rays transparent?
To allow light rays to travel to retina and activate rod and cone cells
Describe the crystalline lens.
Transparent, bi-convex, and suspended from the ciliary body by zonules.
What does the aqueous humor help to maintain?
Intraocular pressure
Where is the anterior and posterior chambers of the eyes?
Anterior- in front of iris
Posterior- behind iris but in front of lens
Where is the anterior and posterior segments of the eyes?
Anterior- in front of lens
Posterior- behind lens
What does the canal of Sclemm do?
Reabsorbs aqueous humor.
Surface anatomy.
Name the:
- White of the eye
- Colour of the eye
- Reflection seen on the surface of the eye
- Sclera
- Iris
- Cornea
Name the condition where the lens of the eye has started to opacify.
Cataracts
