Q

What are some of the joint changes seen in OA ?

A
  • Early changes – small cracks in cartilage. Fibrillation
  • Eventually the cartilage is completely worn away – bone on bone
  • Surface becomes “polished” - eburnation
  • Cortical bone thickens greatly to cope with load. But – fractures
  • Leakage of synovial fluid through bone forming small cysts
  • Rapid remodeling of bone to cope with stress but remodelling is disorganised and produces abnormal outgrowths - osteophytes
