MSK pathology 2 Flashcards
1
Q
What is meant by a pathological fracture ?
A
Bone is not normal before brake
Brakes with low level injury
2
Q
What is avascular necrosis ?
A
The death of bone tissue due to a lack of blood supply.
Blood flow to a section of bone can be interrupted if the bone is fractured or the joint becomes dislocated.
3
Q
What are some of the joint changes seen in OA ?
A
- Early changes – small cracks in cartilage. Fibrillation
- Eventually the cartilage is completely worn away – bone on bone
- Surface becomes “polished” - eburnation
- Cortical bone thickens greatly to cope with load. But – fractures
- Leakage of synovial fluid through bone forming small cysts
- Rapid remodeling of bone to cope with stress but remodelling is disorganised and produces abnormal outgrowths - osteophytes
4
Q
What are the main radiological features of OA ?
A
- Loss of joint space = cartilage loss
- Subchondral sclerosis = eburnation etc.
- Subchondral cysts = Synovial fluid accumulation
- Osteophytes = disorganised bone remodelling
5
Q
Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder what antibody is it associated with ?
A
IgM
