MSK muscle compartments Flashcards
Muscles of the superficial layer of the anterior compartment of the forearm
Lateral-> medial
* Pronator teres
* Flexor carpi radialis
* Palmaris longus
* Flexor carpi ulnaris
What do the muscles of the superficial layer of the anterior forearm do and what innervates them?
All flexors of wrist, fingers or thumb except pronator teres
All innervated by median nerve except flexor carpi ulnaris which is innervated by the ulnar nerve
Muscle of the middle layer of the anterior forearm
Flexor digitorum superficialis
Innervation and action of the muscle of the middle layer of the anterior forearm
Flexes the 4 medial digits
Innervated by median nerve
Muscles of the deep layer of the anterior forearm
- Flexor digitorum profundus
- Flexor pollicis longus
- Pronator quadratus
Innervation and function of the deep muscles of the anterior forearm
All innervated by median nerve except the medial half of the FDP which is innervated by the ulnar nerve
All flexors except pronator quadratus
Outline of the innervation and action of the muscles of the anterior forearm
- flexors, except for pronator teres and pronator quadratus.
- innervated by the median nerve, except FCU and the medial half of FDP.
Muscles of the superficial layer of the posterior compartment of the forearm
- Brachioradialis
- Extensor carpi radialis longus
- Extensor carpi radialis brevis
- Extensor digitorum
- Extensor digiti minimi
- Extensor carpi ulnaris
- Anconeus
Innervation and function of the muscles of the superior layer of the posterior forearm
All innervated by radial nerve
All extensors except brachioradialis which is a weak flexor of the elbow
Muscles of the deep layer of the posterior forearm
Lateral-> medial
* Supinator
* Abductor pollicis longus
* Extensor pollicis brevis
* Extensor pollicis longus
* Extensor indicis.
Innervation and function of the muscles of the deep layer of the posterior forearm
All innervated by the radial nerve
All extensors except supinator and abductor pollicis longus
Summary of all posterior forearm muscles
- extensors, except for brachioradialis, supinator and abductor pollicis longus.
- innervated by the radial nerve.
The muscles that cross the wrist also contribute to wrist extension.

Innervation of the muscles of the thenar eminence and what they act on
Innervated by the median nerve
