Slide 3
- using device resembling a lead I ECG
- BAC test is impacted by recent alcohol and so was measured at the end of the interaction to allow for time for the alcohol to be naturally washed from the mouth
- Measured RR intervals determined the shortest, longest, and mean RR interval of each participant.
Slide 4
To find out age, sex, cardiac medical history, and cardiac medication history
Slide 5
Estimated 1.5% prevalence of any arrythmias in the general population
Slide 7
Strengths:
Took measurement of BAC at the end of the consultation so residual alcohol was washed away
Weaknesses:
This was because of the lack of privacy and meant that they couldn’t get a proper medical history or social history
As they would have been excited and so would have generally faster heart rates than usual- this is shown by (see slide
Slide 8
More accurate than the one used for the acute study
Meant they could limit confounding factors and could ask more personal questions
Slide 9
From this we can see that there were many differences between the acute and KORA studies
Means it is hard to compare the studies and so any conclusions made comparing the studies are inaccurate
Slide 10
As there was shown to be a statistically significant increase in any arrhythmia (especially sinus tachycardia) when compared to the expected value as shown by the fact that the odds ratio is over 1 and the p value is less than 0.001
However despite being statistically significant, it cannot be considered to be clinically relevant as no follow up was done to check for persistence of the arrythmia and the only arrythmia that showed increase in prevalence was sinus tachycardia which is basically just a fast heart rate which can be caused by many factors
Slide 11
Scaremongering title by generalising the effects of arrythmias
no medical qualifications
Slide 12
It might make people reduce the amount they are drinking which is good for other things like their liver health
Shows people that you can’t come to conclusions about links between different factors and diseases from just one study- might make them more likely to be more critical of the info they read about studies
Slide 13
Focus on holiday heart syndrome in article is inaccurate as the study shows no association between BAC and atrial fibrillation but rather with sinus tachycardia. Could cause unnecessary worry about increased risk of Afib when that has not been shown in this study
This is an incredibly generalised statement which doesn’t relate to the study and can cause mass amounts of un-necessary fear as people might think that they will get severe health problems from normal changes in heart rate
Uses words like autonomic imbalance- could be misleading to people if they don’t understand what it means
