What are 3 roles of skeletal muscle?
Movement, Posture, protection and Heat production
What is the muscle belly?
This is the middle part of the muscle that contains the contractile fibres that generate force. Some muscles can have multiple muscle bellies such as the Digastric in the jaw.
Describe what happens when a muscle contracts?
The muscle contracts and pulls the insertion point (bone that moves) closer to the origin (stationary bone). E.g., when the bicep contracts, the radius is pulled closer to the clavicle.
Can muscles cross multiple joints?
Yes- they can usually generate movement at all of them. But not aways very effectively. E.g., harder to clench your fist when you bend your wrist.
What are the 3 types of skeletal muscle contraction?
Concentric= muscle shortens
Eccentric= muscle lengthens
Isometric= muscle stays the same length
What is the primer mover, antagonist, synergist and fixator?
Prime mover= Generates the basic movement
Antagonist= Opposes the action of the prime mover
Fixator= Stabilises bones to allow movement to take place
Synergist= Helps the prime mover
What is the purpose of understanding muscle movement and function for a doctor?
To help the doctor identify the muscle that is causing the pain.
And to understand if the pain is related to a nerve. This is because muscles are usually located within compartments and within a compartment, muscles have a common action, nerve supply and blood supply.
What type of fascia surrounds muscles?
Deep Fascia surrounds muscle compartments.
Superficial Fascia surrounds the deep fascia.
What are tendons?
Located at the end of the muscle and attach it to bone. Can be rounded (e.g. Achilles tendon) or broad and flat (aponeuroses)
What is a tendon reflex?
This is a stretch reflex when a blow on the muscle tendon causes a reflex (movement) in the muscle. This demonstrates the intactness of the nervous system (is it functioning correctly?)
