Head and Neck Flashcards
What are the 3 different fossae of the skull base? What sits in each space?
Anterior cranial fossa- Frontal lobes
Middle Cranial fossa- temporal lobes and pituitary gland (which sits in the pituitary fossa)
Posterior Cranial fossa- Cerebellum and part of the brain stem
Where do cranial nerves exit from the Cranium?
exit through dura lined foramina
What cranial nerve supplies the muscles of facial expression?
Facial nerve (CNVII)
What cranial nerve supplies the muscles of mastication?
Trigeminal (CNV)- Mandibular division- 3rd part
What gland produces tears? What CN stimulates secretion from this gland?
Lacrimal gland
Facial gland
What muscles move the eye and eyelid?
Extraocular muscles
What are the parts of the external ear?
Pinna and ear canal
What is the role of the nasal cavity?
Olfaction (smelling) and Warms and humidifies the air
Which CN is responsible for taste in the tongue?
Whic CN is responsible for moving the tongue?
CNVII- Facial- Front half of the tongue
CNIX- Glossopharyngeal- Back half of the tongue
CNXII- Hypoglossal
What four cranial nerves have a parasympathetic component?
Oculomotor nerve- CN III
Facial nerve- CNVII
Glossopharyngeal- CNIX
Vagus- CNX
Where does sympathetic innervation to the head and neck arise from?
Arises from the thorax and then travels through the sympathetic trunk and then distributed via plexi that surround blood vessels.
What innervates the pharynx?
Glossopharyngeal and Vagus nerves (CNIX and CNX)
What is the function of the larynx?
Innervation?
Protection of the airways and sound generation.
Vagus nerve (CNX)
What artery supplies the brain and brainstem?
Internal Carotid artery
On what side is there a brachiocephalic trunk that branches off the arch of the aorta?
Right side- On the left, the common carotid artery comes directly from the arch of the aorta
