What can cause osteomyelitis?
Open fractures, prosthetic joint, haematogenous spread, vertebral, diabetes/ vascular insufficiency
What is the early management of an open fracture?
Aggressive debridement, fixation and soft tissue cover
What are the typical infective organisms of an open fracture?
Staph aureus and aerobic gram neg
What are the pathogens for sickle cell osteomyelitis?
Salmonella and s.aureus
What is Gaucher’s disease?
Lysosomal storage disease
How would you treat vertebral osteomyelitis
Drainage of large paravertebral /epidural abscess and antimicrobials for 6 weeks
In Pott’s in kids what should you check?
– in kids check reduced receptors for IFN – gamma R1, IL12 beta 1
What are the risk factors for prosthetic joint infections?
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Diabetes
- Malnutrition
- Obesity

flucloxacillin, clindamycin, linezolid

What is the treatment for septic arthritis?
Fluclox, add Ceftriaxone if less than 5 years old
What could be the pathogens causing viral arthritis?
- Alphavirus, Hep B, Parovirus B19, Rubella virus
What is tetanus?
Neurotoxin, causing spastic paralysis - prevents release of neurotransmitters
