MSK Anatomy Flashcards
The thumb (1st metacarpal) has no __________ (whereas all the other metacarpals do)
intermediate phalanx
The proximalrow of the carpals articulate with the ulna and radius and are comprised of
mn: So Long To Pinky
Scaphoid Lunate Triquetral Pisiform
mnemonic to know where to start (and to separate the triquetral and the pisiform): the scaphoid is Sizeable and the pisiform is closest to the pinky
or you can just remeber it’s going frtom lateral to medial
the distal row from lateral to medial is
mn: Here Comes The Thumb (continuing in circular pattern from the pisiform)
Traprezium
Trapezoid
Capitate
Hamate
what bones comprise the radiocarpal joint
indicated by red Xs
extensor expansions
Although there are 5 deep palmar muscles, there are only 3 interosseous muscles
They are:
1st palmar interosseus (2nd metacarpal)
2nd palmar interosseus (4th metacarpal)
3rd palmar interosseus (5th metacarpal)
Interossei are named such because they span between the 2 bones of 1 finger: the metacarpal and the proximal phalange
mn:
- “interosseus” and “deep” both sound like a dirty word. … but ironically the two dirty fingers are the one’s left out of the action
- notice, they all are located on the side of the finger pointing to the middle
What do these two clinical signs mean
Sail sign indicates effusion
Fat pad sign is due to displacement during humeral fracture
What muscles are these (and on what side of the hand)
dorsal interossei muscles
What are these muscles (and on what side of the hand)?
palmar interossei
what are the muscles of the thenar compartment
- opponens pollicis
- abductor pollicis brevis
- flexor pollicis brevis
what is the innervation of the thenar compartment muscles
Recurrent branch of median nerve
the median nerve innervates which muscles of the hand
1/2 L.O.A.F
the first 2 lumbricals, opponens pollicis, abductor pollicis brevis and flexor pollicis brevis
what is the actiofn of the lumbricals
extension of phalanges and flexion of metcarpal-phalangeal joint –> resulting in an L shape of the hand
mn: the lumbricals are Lob-sided. on the lateral side they are bipennate (2) and on the medial side they are unipennate (2)
where specifically is the infection
hypothenar space
where is the subaponeurotic space?
subaponeurotic space lies between the metacarpal bones and the extensor tendons (deep to the subcutaneous space)
