Types of synovial (freely movable) joints? With examples of each
- Hinge: elbow
- Condylar: knee
- Ball and socket: hip and shoulder
What is a cartilaginous joint?
Slightly movable. Pivot like the neck and gliding like the wrist
What is an immovable joint?
A fibrous joint which is bone to bone connection such as skull sutures
What movements do you test the cervical spine for?
Flexion/extension, rotation, lateral rotation
What movements do you test the shoulder joints for?
Flexion/extension/hyperextension, external rotation/internal rotation, abduction/adduction , circumduction
What movements do you assess the elbow for?
Flexion/extension, pronation/supination
What movements do you assess the wrist for?
Flexion/extension, ulnar deviation/radial deviation
What movements do you test for in the hands?
Flexion and extension of MCP, PIP, and DIP joints. Abduction and adduction of fingers
What movements do you assess in the hip joint?
Abduction/adduction, flexion/extension, internal rotation/external rotation
What movements do you assess in the knee joint?
Flexion and extension
What is genu valgus ?
Knock knees
What is genu varum?
Bow legs
What is the normal motion of the ankles?
Plantar flexión/Dorsiflexion, inversion/Eversion
What is normal motion of the feet and toes?
Flexion/extension, abduction/ adduction
What does hypotonic muscle tone mean?
Flaccid, soft
