What are the three layers of the heart wall?
- Myocardium-pump
- Endocardium-Chambers and valves
- Pericardium-double walled sac separated by fluid
What are five major risk factors for heart disease?
Obesity (BMI > 30), Smoking history, DM, HTN, HLD
What is the area where the heart sits called?
Precordium
Where can we see signs of central cyanosis?
Lips, gums, tongue, oral mucosa, conjunctiva
What does central cyanosis suggest in terms of circulation?
Poor arterial circulation
Where can we look for signs of peripheral cyanosis?
Fingers/toes, earlobes, nails
What does peripheral cyanosis suggest is going on with the blood vessels?
Peripheral vasoconstriction
With what part of our hand do we palpate for thrills?
MCP joints
What are heaves?
Lifting from vigorous pulsation
What are thrills on palpitation?
Vibrations
What causes the S1 sound?
Closure of tricuspid and mitral valves
Is the “lub” sound the start or end of systole?
Start of systole
What creates the S2 sound, the end of systole?
Closure of aortic and pulmonic valves (SL valves)
What are the precordial areas for auscultation?
Aortic, Pulmonic, tricuspid, and mitral
What is a split sound?
When valves are not closing at the same time
