MRI Flashcards
What does MRI stand for?
Magnetic Resonance Imaging
advantages of MRI
Non invasive
Superior clarity of images
define composition of a lesion
How does an MRI work?
uses the magnetic characteristics of hydrogen atoms which are contained in water molecules in the patients body
What happens to the patient when they have an MRI
the patient is subjected to radiowaves which disorientates the bodys protons so that they emit tiny radio signals - these radio signals are detected and converted to an image by a computer
what magnetic field dangers does an MRI have?
- attain if the pt has any metal surgical implants as they may move or dislodge
what contrast media can be used with MRI
Gadolinium to enhance and show damage to the blood brain barrier, vascularity of lesions
disadvantages of an MRI
- rare in nz
- expensive
