Q

What is a lipids properties

A

A lipid is a mixed group of hydrophobic components. Nonpolar. Composed of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. They are insoluble in water soluble in organic solvents such as alcohols. Most lipids are fats and oils.

Q

What is a saturated fatty acid and unsaturated fatty acid

A

Saturated fats and acid has no hydrogen atoms that could be added if a fatty acid has double bonds which means it is unsaturated

Q

What food test could be done to find a lipid

A

And ethanol emotion test could be used this is by adding a small amount of suspected oil to the ethanol and shaking vigourously to dissolve in the lipid then add water and if your parents changes to form a white precipitate on the top of the substance a lipid is present.

Q

The structure, Function and properties of a triglyceride

A

A triglyceride is made of One glycerol molecule with three fatty acid molecules. They consist of a Carbonic group with hydro chains attached. Triglycerides are known as fat stores in animals e.g. camels burn fat to get water molecules and adapt to their dry environment. Saturated fats have a high melting point have more bonds to break.

Q

What are the structures, functions, properties of a phospholipid

A

A phospholipid is a modified triglyceride as they contain phosphorus along with carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. Phospholipids are negatively charged and soluble in water. They have non polar for the chains. A phospholipid is broken into two parts the head which is a hydrophilic and the tales are hydrophobic and off to form a bilayer. They are found in cell-surface membranes and they help move substances through a semipermeable barrier.

Q

What are the structure, functions and properties of cholesterol

A

Cholesteryl is a waxy substance present in blood plasma also present in animal tissues and cell-surface membranes they provide support and strength to keep a flexible rigid structure cholesteryl is odourless and tasteless it has a chemical formula of C27 H16 O and it is white and crystalline substance.
