What medicine group is MPP part of?
Osmotic Laxative.
What route can MPP be administered?
Oral.
Indications of MPP?
Water retained in large bowel from the body or administered fluid to treat constipation.
What are the side effects of MPP?
Abdominal distension, pain, nausea and flatulence.
With high doses impaired gag reflex, reflux oesophagitis, impaired consciousness.
Cautions of MMP?
Intestinal obstruction Paralytic Ileus Severe Inflammatory conditions of intestinal tract (Chrons's disease, ulcerative colitis, toxic megacolon) Cardiovascular impairment Renal impairment
What are the nursing implications of MPP?
Monitor and record fluid balance chart
Ensure bowels are opened regularly and report/take action
Ensure adequate fluid intake
Patient education: encourage other strategies to prevent/treat constipation. Refer to other services if necessary (e.g school nurse/dietician)
