What routes can GI be administered?
Oral
Indications of GI?
Increases the viscosity of stomach contents and can protect the oesophageal mucosa from acid reflux.
What are side effects of GI?
Can have a laxative effect.
Contradictions and cautions of GI?
Avoid high usage when contents contain high sodium and magnesium in children with liver and renal impairment.
Don’t use with other agents that contain thickening agents.
Don’t use in pre-term infants or children neonate where excessive fluid loss is likely.
Don’t use if intestinal blockage is suspected.
Don’t take at same time of other drugs.
Nursing implications of GI?
Reassure neonatal/infants parents that symptoms are not complicated and usually resolve without intervention.
Increasing frequency and decreasing volume of feeds can alleviate symptoms.
Complete fluid balance charts, record feeding pattern, vomiting or altered bowel function.
