Movements Flashcards
Gliding
Nearly flat bones sliding past one another
(ex: intercarpal and intertarsal joints and Zygopophyseal joint)
Flexion
Decreases the angle between bones (elbow joint)
Extension
Increasing the angle between bones (elbow joint)
Lateral flexion
decrease angle along frontal plane (bend left or right)
Hyperextension
extend beyond anatomical position
Abduction
move away from midline
Adduction
move towards the midline
Circumduction
movement of the distal end of a body part in a circle (shoulder)
Rotation
revolve around an axis (atlantoaxial joint)
pivot joint, ball and socket
Medial rotation
anterior surface turns toward midline (bending arm to an “L” shape, turn towards the body)
Lateral rotation
anterior surface turns away from midline (bending arm to an “L” shape, turn away from body)
Elevation and Depression
scapula and mandible
Protraction and Retraction
temporomandibular joint
Inversion and eversion
at intertarsal joints (inversion: bend foot inwards; eversion: bend foot outwards, like you’re rolling it)
Dorsiflexion and Plantiflexion
talocrural joint (Dorsiflexion = up; Plantarflexion = down)
