Epithelial Cells Flashcards
Simple Squamous structure and function?
S: A single layer of flattened, tightly bound cells
F: Diffusion and filtration (Covering visceral organs, lining of body cavities, ducts, and tubes)
Simple Cuboidal
S: Single layer of cube-shaped cells
F: Excretion, Secretion, or Absorption (Salivary ducts, Surface of ovaries)
Simple columnar
S: Single layer of non-ciliated, tall, column-shaped cells
F: Protection, Secretion, and Absorption (Lines most of the digestive tract)
Simple Ciliated Columnar
S: Single layer of ciliated, column-shaped cells
F: Transport role (Lining of uterine tubes)
Pseudostratified ciliated columnar
S: Single layer of ciliated, irregularly-shaped cells (many goblet cells)
F: Protection, Secretion, Ciliary movement ( Lining respiratory passageways)
Stratified Squamous (keratinized)
S: Numerous layers containing keratin; outer layers flattened and dead
F: Protection ( Epidermis of Skin)
Stratified Squamous (non-keratinized)
S: Numerous layers lacking keratin; outer layers moistened and alive
F: Protection and Pliability (Lining of oral and nasal cavities; vagina and anal canal)
Stratified Cuboidal
S: Usually 2 layers of cube-shaped cells
F: Strengthening of luminal walls (Sweat glands, Pancreas)
Transitional Epithelium
S: Numerous layers of rounded, non-keratinized cells
F: Distention (swelling) (Ureters, Urinary bladder)
