Movement through Membranes Flashcards
What does permeable mean?
Substances can pass through (e.g. cell wall)
What does impermeable mean?
Substances cannot pass through
What does selectively permeable mean?
Certain substances can pass through (e.g. cell membrane)
What function do all membranes have in common?
All selectively permeable
What is the structure of a phospholipid?
Phosphate head and lipid tail (with protein channels)
What is diffusion?
The movement of gases from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
What type of process is diffusion?
Passive (no energy required)
Where does diffusion occur in animals?
At the alveoli in lungs in animals
Where does diffusion occur in plants?
At the stomata in the leaves in plants
What is active transport?
Movement of substances from an area of low concentration to high concentration across a semi-permeable membrane.
Is energy required in active transport?
Yes, energy (ATP) is required
Where does active transport occur in the animals?
Occurs in the kidneys (distal convoluted tubule)
Where does active transport occur in plants?
Occurs in the root
What is osmosis?
The movement of water particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration across a semi-permeable membrane until both concentrations are the same.
What type of process is osmosis?
Passive (no energy needed)
