Cell Diversity Flashcards
What is a cell?
The cell is the basic unit of all living things.
What is a tissue?
Group of cells working together for a specific function.
Name two tissue groups
Cardiac (cardiac muscle never tires)
Muscular (fast acting in response to stimulus)
Name two types of plant tissue
Dermal tissue (Make up outer layer of plant organs, deter water loss and invasion by insects and microorganisms)
Vascular tissue (Used for transport)
Name two types of animal tissue
Connective tissue (Structure in the body)
Nervous tissue (transfers electrochemical impulses)
What is an organ?
Group of tissues working together for a specific function.
What is a system?
Group of organs working together for a specific function.
Explain what is meant by the term ‘Tissue Culture’
Growth of cells on a sterile nutrient medium outside of the body (organism)
What does ‘In Vitro’ mean
In glass
List the steps involved in tissue culture
- Cells taken from a sample (meristematic/embryonic cells).
- Placed in a nutrient medium that has its environment controlled.
- Chemicals/ hormones added to stimulate growth - callous.
- Remove callous and place in nutrient medium controlled.
- Tissue will form.
Name an example of tissue culture in animals
Skin graft (can be used in cancer research)
Name an example of tissue culture in plants
Micropropagation (large numbers produced, identical genetically, if parent is diseased all offspring will be too)
What is the difference between a prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell
Prokaryote - Do not have a membrane bound nucleus, DNA is loose moving around the cytoplasm, do not have membrane bound organelles.
Eukaryote - Have a membrane bound nucleus, DNA is enclosed inside a nucleus with a membrane, have membrane bound organelles
