What is a skill?
The ability to do something well
What is a motor skill?
defined by:
- Voluntary, goal directed activities, that we learn through practice and experience
- special form of movement that require movement of the body or limbs to achieve a goal
What is a fine motor skill?
Recruitment of smaller muscles / muscle groups. Movement require precision
what is a gross motor skill?
Recruitment of larger muscle groups and large parts of the body. Movement
accuracy / precision not as important.
Classifying movement skills
- fine or gross
- Discrete, Serial or Continuous
- Open or Closed
What is a discrete skill?
Single movement with a distinct start and finish.
eg:
darts
golf putting
basketball free throw
Serial skills and examples
Several discrete skills performed in sequence that creates a continuous performance.
eg:
1. Gymnastics floor routine 2. dance performance
Continuous Skills
No distinct beginning or end.
eg:
1. Dribbling a basketball
2. running
Open Skills
- Are performed in unpredictable and externally paced environments
- the conditions are constantly changing and the performer has limited control
- game like scenarios
Closed skills
Highly predictable environment and internally paced
The performer has greatest control over the performance environment.
eg: coach throwing a baseball at a baseballer to help them understand how to swing the ball
Fundamental Movement (Motor) Skills
foundation skills that provide the framework to build from and progress a skill further
necessary for the development of more advanced sport specific skills.
Sport Specific Skills
advanced versions of fundamental movement skills
