Mouth Preparation For RPD Flashcards
What is mouth preparation?
A series of procedures executed to repair, alter, and/or protect remaining teeth.
To prevent or redirect adverse forces that may affect supporting teeth, periodontal tissues, and residual alveolar bone crest.
Obtaining retention and support for a removable prosthesis for maximum period of time.
What are the 2 stages of mouth preparation of an RPD
1st stage: Clinical interventions to establish a healthy condition of hard and soft tissues in the mouth.
2nd stage: Interventions on remaining teeth aiming at improving biomechanical conditions between teeth and supporting structures. (during this phase we replace lost tissues and stabilize occlusion)
Which treatments are part of the 1st stage of mouth preparation for RPD?
Emergency phase: Eliminate pain, infection, and inflammation.
Periodontal treatment
Endodontic treatment
Restorative treatment
Oral surgeries (pre-prosthetic surgeries)
Orthodontic treatment
Occlusal adjustments
Holding phase: Preserve residual dentition.
What is done during the second stage of treatment?
Replace lost tissues, stabilize occlusion
Rest seat preparation
Tooth recontouring (Height of contour, guiding planes):
Dropping the height of the contour
Creating guiding planes
What kind of oral surgeries need to be carried out before placing RPDs?
Extractions
Removal of residual roots
Removal of mandibular tori
Removal of exostosis, hyperplastic tissue, high muscle attachments
Round of sharp bony spines and knife-edge ridges
Reduction of maxillary tuberosity volume
When is ortho treatment indicated for RPDs?
Molar leaning into edentulous area
Tooth rotation
Labial migration of anterior teeth
How is tooth reduction transferred from model to the mouth?
Free hand
Dura-lay guide
Base plate
How can height of contour be raised?
Prepare an undercut using a bur
Add composite to create undercut
Surveyed crown
How can undercut be prepared using a bur?
With bur: Creating a gentle depression where the tip of the retention arm will be placed following shape and design of selected retentive tip.
Why are surveyed crowns used?
They have guiding planes, adequate contour as well as rest seats.
