Mouth, Esophagus and Stomach (lesson 4) Flashcards
What is the function of saliva?
1) Lubrication
2) Protection
3) Chemical digestion
What are the four types of teeth and how much for each
Total?
- 8 incisors
- 4 canines
- 8 premolars
- 12-8 molars
Total: 28 but with wisdom teeth 31
What is the tongue made out of and covered with?
Made of out muscle and covered with mucus glands and tastebuds
What are the functions of the tongue?
1) Helps with speech
2) Helps with chewing by moving food
3) Creates bolus (ball of chewed food and saliva
4) By swallowing, pushes food to hard palate towards throat
What is the esophagus?
Thin tube with muscle and lined with mucus to help peristaltic movement (muscle contractions)
Describe the stomach
J shape pouch that have inner walls that are highly folded into many ridges called reggae
What is the cardiac sphincter (aka lower esophageal sphincter)
Ring of muscle tissue lining the entrance of stomach and preventing back-flow up to esophagus
What are the two digestions of the stomach?
1) Mechanical digestion: Muscles lining walls of stomach contract, physical breaking down food into smaller pieces
2) Chemical digestion:
-Gastric juices (contains rennin) helps chemical breaking down of food
-Hormone gaskin released when bolus past the cardiac sphincter
-Gastin goes to bloodstream and cause glands in stomach release gastric juices
- Gastic juices do chemical digestion and contain pepsin
What is pepsin?
Pepsin breaks up proteins into short peptides
