Introduction to Digestion, Enzymes (lesson 3) Flashcards
What are the three processes digestion is composed?
1) Breakdown of food into small molecules
2) Absorption of these small molecules into blood
3) Removal of waste products
What is the digestive tract?
Long tube that starts in your mouth and winds through body ending at the tract and digestion happens here
What other organs are not apart of this tract but also help in digestion?
Liver and pancreas
What is the two types of digestion and explain each?
1) Mechanical digestion: Breakdown of food into smaller pieces, increase SA and makes chemical digestion more efficient and physical movement mix food with enzymes
eg: Chewing, churning in stomach
2) Chemical digestions: Enzymes help break chemical bonds within large food molecules so it can be absorbed by small intestine
eg: Carbs brown down into monosaccharides
What do enzymes do?
They are proteins that speed up and make ideal conditions for chemical reactions to happen
Explain the lock and key model of enzyme action
Every enzyme is like a lock because each enzyme needs a specific key (substrate). The gap of the key and the lock would be the active site and in order to get the door open (create a product)
What are some enzymes involved in digestion?
1) Amylase
2) Maltase
3) Lipase
4) Proteases
What are three factors affecting enzyme action with simple definitions
1) Temp: As temp rises, chemical reactions tend to speed up
2) Factors affecting enzyme action: More substrate = more action
3) Inhibitors: Block enzyme action and can take up the active site or change shape of enzyme
