Motorways
Help traffic travel at constant, higher speeds than single carriageways.
You need to be alert at all times.
When you join the motorway:
Use the slip road to adjust your speed to match the traffic already on the motorway
Give way to traffic already on the motorway
Left hand lane on the Motorway
All traffic
Middle and right hand lanes on Motorway
Only for overtaking other vehicles
Countdown markers
On the left hand verge show that you’re approaching the next exit
National speed limit (Motorways)
70mph
Obey any signs showing a lower speed limit
A vehicle towing a trailer (Motorway)
Is restricted to 60mph
Isn’t allowed to travel in the right hand lane of a motorway (with 3 or more lanes)

Active traffic management
Also known as ‘managed motorways’
True to reduce congestion and make journey times more reliable- traffic speed limits
Mandatory speed limit
The maximum speed at which you may travel
Reflective studs- green
Between the carriageway and slip roads
Reflective studs- red
Between the hard shoulder and carriageway
Reflective studs- White
Between lanes
Reflective studs- Amber
Between the edge of the carriageway and the central reservation
Reflective studs- fluorescent green/yellow
